Setting up R710 explained

This answer applies to:

  • R710

Before starting setup, there are some things to consider

Wherever you decide to locate R710, you should ensure that it has good connection with your Wi-Fi router. If the signal is weak, then this may result in unreliable performance and in this case, you should consider either moving R710 closer to your router or else use a range extender or Powerline Adaptors.

With power applied for the first time, firstly the Ruark logo is displayed and next R710 enters setup mode where you are prompted to input language and location. This is done by rotating and pressing the control knob to navigate the on-screen menus. With language and location set, next you are taken to network setup. R710 offers a few different options to setup a Wi-Fi connection, but here we are going to explain Password and Apple WAC setup.

Network setup using Network Wizard (Password Entry)

To connect using Network Wizard, click the control knob to select and then click on Wi-Fi scan. This starts a search for local networks and once done displays a list. Using the control knob, scroll to your network and click to select. Next you are prompted to enter your passcode. Generally, your passcode will be shown on your router, so if you haven’t already created your own custom code, please ensure that you have this passcode written down. Now use the control knob to input the passcode exactly as shown and once done, select the return key to enter. R710 will now initiate connection and assuming that the passcode has been entered correctly will soon display connected.

Next R710 gives you the option to change its name. This could be its location, but primarily it makes R710 easy to identify as a device on your network and is useful if you intend to use R710 as part of a multiroom setup. If you choose not to change the preset name, then you can always do this later through system settings.

With your Wi-Fi connection established, next the setup wizard provides the opportunity to setup Google Cast. If you are an Apple user it may be that you don’t require this feature as we guess that primarily you will use AirPlay and services such as Spotify Connect for your music playback, but if you are an Android user or have a Google nest hub, then you should install, as you can then also use voice commands to activate R710 if desired. Installing Google Cast is simply a case of using the camera on your phone, to read the QR code on the Chromecast setup screen and when the code is recognised, tap the phone screen to proceed. To complete the installation, you will need to accept the ‘Terms of Service’ and then decide if you want to share device stats and crash reports. Opting in does not share any personal information but simply creates logs for Google to analyse should a connection fault occur. Once you’ve made your choice, next you will see a screen confirming that Google Cast setup has been completed. If you choose not to install Google Cast, then this can always be done later, by selecting the Google Cast source and then the menu button.

Next R710 checks to see if there are any software updates available. If new software is detected, then R710 will automatically download and install the latest version. During download it is important that you do not disconnect power or touch any of the controls, but whether or not there is a software update available, when finished, select continue to proceed.

This completes the main setup, but finally you will see a message saying your R710 remote can now be paired. How to do this is explained elsewhere in these Q&A’s but now select Finish and next you will see the source menu list, showing you are now ready to start using R710.

Network setup using Apple WAC

To connect R710 to your network using Apple WAC, firstly you should ensure that your iOS device is already connected to the Wi-Fi network to which you wish to connect.

Setting of Language, Location and Region is the same as described previously, but when you come to Network Wizard scroll to Apple WAC and then click the control knob to select. Next you will see a message saying that R710 is ready to be setup using an iOS device. Unlock your iPhone, tap the Settings icon and then select Wi-Fi. This displays the Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to and below this other local networks. Wait a few moments and then below you should see R710 with its ID code appear. Tap this and next you will see a screen with a tick beside the network that you are connecting your unit to. At this point you also have the opportunity to change R710’s name by tapping on Speaker Name and then editing as you wish. With the changes made, tap next in the top right-hand corner of your phone to continue and next you will see a screen showing that connection is taking place. Once connected you will see a screen confirming connection and the display on R710 will confirm this too.

After completing Apple WAC, next as described previously you have the opportunity to setup Google Cast and check for software updates.

This completes the setup procedure.
