Setting up 100 Series explained
This answer applies to:
- R410
- R610
- R810
Before starting setup, there are a couple of things to consider
All our 100 Series models have been designed for streaming and with their Internet Radio tuner you have access to National and International stations, many in higher quality than you will receive through DAB or FM, so if you do not require these functions then the supplied telescopic aerial does not need be fitted.
Secondly, wherever you decide to position your 100 Series model, you should ensure that it has good connection with your Wi-Fi router. If the signal is weak, then this may result in unreliable performance and in this case you should consider using a range extender or Powerline Network Adaptors which are both readily available.
With power applied for the first time, firstly the Ruark logo is displayed and next 100 Series enters Setup Wizard mode where you are prompted to input Language and Location. This is done by rotating and pressing the control knob to navigate the on screen menus. With language and location set, next the wizard takes you to Network setup. 100 Series offers a few different options to setup a Wi-Fi connection, but here we are going to explain Password and Apple WAC setup.
Network setup using Network Wizard (Password Entry)
To connect using Network Wizard, click the control knob to select and then click again on Wi-Fi scan. This starts a search of Wi-Fi connections and once done a list of available networks is displayed. Using the control knob, scroll to your network and click to select. Next you are prompted to enter your Wi-Fi passcode. Generally your passcode will be shown on your router, so if you haven’t already created your own custom password please ensure that you have this passcode written down. Now use the control knob to input your passcode and once done, click on the return key to enter. 100 Series will now display connecting and then soon after connected.
Next your 100 Series gives you the option to change its name. This could be its location, but primarily it makes your 100 Series easy to identify as a device on your network and is useful if you intend to use your model as part of a multiroom system. If you choose not change the preset name, then you can always do this later through system settings.
With the Wi-Fi connection established, next the setup wizard provides the opportunity to setup Google Cast. If you are an Apple user it may be that you don’t require this feature as we guess that primarily you will use AirPlay and services such as Spotify Connect for your music playback, but if you are an Android user or have a Google nest hub in your home, then you should install, as you can then also your voice to control 100 Series if desired. Installing Google Cast is simply a case of activating the camera on your phone, aligning it with the Chromecast setup screen on your 100 Series and when the QR code is recognised, tap the phone screen to proceed. To complete the installation you will need to accept the Google Cast ‘Terms of Service’ and then decide if you want to share device stats and crash reports. Opting in does not share any personal information, but simply creates logs for Google to analyse should a connection fault occur. Once you’ve made your choice, next you will see a screen confirming that Google Cast setup has been completed. If you choose not to install Google Cast at this stage, then it can always be installed at a later date, by selecting the Google Cast source on 100 Series and then selecting the menu button.
Next 100 Series checks to see if there is a software update available. If new software is detected then 100 Series will automatically download and install the latest version. During this process it is important that you do not disconnect power or touch any of the controls, but whether or not there is a software update available, when finished, select continue to proceed.
This completes the main setup procedure, but finally you will see a message saying your 100 Series remote can now be paired through the system settings menu. How to do this is explained elsewhere in these Q&A’s, but now select Finish to end setup and next you will see the 100 Series source menu showing you the list of available sources.
Network setup using Apple WAC and AirPlay
To connect your 100 Series model using Apple WAC, firstly you should ensure that your iOS device is already connected to the Wi-Fi network to which you wish to connect your unit.
Setting of Language, Location and Region is the same as described previously, but when you come to Network Wizard scroll to Apple WAC and then click the control knob to select. Next you will see a message saying that 100 Series is ready to be setup using an iOS device. Unlock your iPhone, tap the Settings icon and then select Wi-Fi. This displays the Wi-Fi network your phone is connected to and below this other networks in your location. Wait a few moments and then below this you should see you 100 Series model with its unique ID code. Tap this and next you will see a screen with a tick beside the network that you are connecting your unit to. At this point you also have the opportunity to change your units name by tapping on Speaker Name and then editing as you wish. With the changes made, tap next in the top right hand corner to continue and next we see a screen showing that connection is taking place. Once connected you will next see a screen confirming your unit has joined your network and the display on your unit will confirm this too.
After completing Network Setup using Apple WAC, next as described previously you have the opportunity to setup Google Cast and check for software updates.
This completes the setup of all 100 Series models.
