FM, DAB or Internet Radio. Which should I choose?

FM, DAB and Internet Radio each use different technologies, providing pros and cons which are listed below, but overall, we think that in this modern era Internet Radio offers the best in sound and choice.

FM Radio

Advantages

• Reliable coverage: Works well in remote or rural areas where DAB digital signals can be weak.
• High fidelity: Good analogue sound quality for music without digital compression.

Disadvantages

• Limited stations: Far less choices than digital options.
• Interference: Prone to static and hiss from weather or physical barriers. A good quality aerial is essential, for best reception
• No extra data: Cannot display text information like track names or station logos.

DAB Radio

Advantages

• Clearer reception: No static or hiss; sound is either clear or cuts out completely.
• More choice: Offers a wider range of stations than FM.
• Extra info: Screens can show song titles, artist names, and news updates.
• Easy tuning: Search and select stations by name instead of frequency.

Disadvantages

• Coverage gaps: Signal can be patchy or unavailable in rural areas.
• Audio compression: Low bitrates on some stations can make the sound metallic or compressed.

Internet Radio

Advantages

• Global reach: Access to tens of thousands of stations from all over the world.
• Highest potential quality: Unconstrained by broadcast limits, allowing for high bitrates which provide best sound.
• No aerial needed: Does not rely on an aerial or physical line-of-sight to a broadcast tower.

Disadvantages

• Requires internet: Will not work during broadband outages or without a stable Wi-Fi connection.
• Buffering and delay: Can be prone to brief pauses, dropouts, or lag compared to live analogue/digital broadcasts, if the Wi-Fi signal is weak or slow.
