A trained engineer, Alan inherited his love of audio from his father Brian, a fellow gifted craftsman who spent his life working in the British audio industry. Alan’s experience as a musician and loudspeaker designer has given him a deep knowledge of how sound works and what makes a product sound ‘right’. To him most radios and music systems offered poor sound quality and design. It was the belief that he could do something better that led Alan and brother-in-law Neil Adams to launch Ruark Audio. Alan is 'hands-on' in every aspect of the company and passionate about design and music.
Having previously trained as an electronic engineer Neil joined Ruark in 1988, working with Alan and Brian looking after production. When Alan’s father retired from the business in 2000 Neil became Alan’s co-director and is now responsible for planning and the day-to-day running of the company. Always a keen sportsman with a very strong ethic to stay healthy and fit, Neil has taken up yoga and meditation and his flexibility now knows no bounds. Having a great interest in art, he is also a very good amateur painter, whether it be landscape or portraiture. Like Alan, Neil loves to be out in the great outdoors and can often be found on the beach or in the woods walking Millie (when he’s not standing on his head that is!)
At 19, Richard left his home town of Ballymena in Northern Ireland to follow his dream of becoming a professional footballer having been spotted and signed by Manchester City. This he enjoyed for a few years until a bad injury put an early end to his career, but this led him to marketing and sales and as head of sales and marketing at Ruark Audio, Richard’s ‘team player’ attitude and resolve has been a great asset. This determination can also be seen in his love of cycling as Richard has now competed in L’Etape de tour (part of the Tour de France) twice! Competing in this race is a feat in itself as this is considered the ‘iron man’ of endurance cycling for amateur cyclists. Moreover he has also raised a great amount of money for the charity Macmillan, which is a cause close to his heart. Having recently bought a house, Richard is now an accomplished, plumber, electrician, plasterer, bricklayer, painter/decorator - you name it, Richard can do it!
A gifted designer with an eye for quality, Jan has been with Ruark Audio from the beginning, overseeing the transformation of our products from design concepts all the way through to production and the finished article. Jan blends his technical and creative skills as a designer working closely with Alan and the development team on product design and innovation. Part industrial designer, part engineer and part graphic designer, Jan’s input into Ruark Audio’s growing success has been substantially and without question, he is a key member of the team. Prior to working with Ruark, Jan had his own design consultancy working on an diverse mix of projects ranging from lighting through to marine navigation aids. Jan holds a first-class Master of Engineering degree from the University of Bristol and a Master of Arts degree from the Royal College of Art.
Customer Service Manager
Having worked in the printing industry for over 20 years, as well as having a wealth of knowledge of all things practical and technical, Terry is our ‘go-to’ man for all things customer related. He has an excellent way with dealing with any queries, as and when they arise, in a calm and reassuring manner, which is exactly what we want from a Customer Service Manager. Terry is married with three grown-up children and when he’s not to be found up a ladder (with DIY being one of his hobbies) he enjoys taking to two wheels and is a keen cyclist, although has yet to do L’Etape de tour with Richard, preferring the gentle slopes of the Essex countryside.
John has joined us as our new Development Engineer and his knowledge of electronics and engineering is amazing. He is a very welcome addition to our team here and has already proven himself to be a real asset to the company. As well as his electronics and engineering expertise, John is an extremely accomplished horseman, being lucky enough to own several horses and riding regularly. In fact he had his own equestrian centre in France, where he lived for 6 years. When he’s not to be found on four legs, his next love is motorbikes – so all in all quite an action man!

Simon joined Ruark Audio in September 2011 after graduating from Anglia Ruskin University with a First in Computer Science and has since made himself an invaluable member of our development team. Outside work, Simon’s hobbies include electronic hardware and software and listening to an eclectic mix of music, which we know about from listening to his playlists when he’s testing our products! Archie & Millie
The Company Woofers
Archie and Millie are our office dogs (Archie is Alan’s four legged friend and Millie Neil’s) and they’re possibly the two most spoilt pooches on the planet! When we’re stressed and running around in a panic their laid back nature and simple needs brings us back down to earth.
